CHADLINGTON PETTY SESSIONS.
County Police Station, Chipping Norton, Oct. 21st.
Before the Rev. Thomas Harris (chairman), Rev. W.E.D. Carter, and J.F. Penyston, Esq.
MASTER AND SERVANT AT MILTON.
Charles Pratley, of Milton-under-Wychwood, labourer, was brought up in custody, and charged by Mr.. William Bliss, of the same place, farmer, with unlawfully, absenting himself from service on the 15th of June last.- Mr. Bliss stated - I engaged the lad on November 4th, 1873, until Michaelmas, as under carter, at a certain rate of wage per week, and to have beer at certain times the same as other lads on the farm; during the whole of the time he was in my service he went on very badly with his work, and left me just as we were busy in hay making. Just as we were going to commence carrying defendant came and told me that he would not go on any longer, unless I would consent to give him two quarts of beer per day for a month of hay-time and a similar quantity of beer for the same time at harvest; he behaved very badly all the summer, and was an idle fellow. Phillip Pratley, brother of the defendant, who was present when the engagement took place, was called for the defence.- The Magistrates ordered that defendant should pay the costs, and that the whole of the wages due to him should be abated. |
