another case of bicycle theft.

Frederick Thomas Pratley, watchmaker, 9, Beef-lane, was charged with stealing, on March 17th, from St. Mary's Witney, High-street, a Humber bicycle, value £7, the property of Dr. William Collier.- Charles Jackson, 7, Hollybush-row, in the employ of Dr. Collier, said he last saw the bicycle, on March 17th, standing outside Dr. Collier's house.- Mrs. Curtis, wife of the landlord of the Crown Inn, Banbury, said on March 28th prisoner came to her house. She had known him for some years. He had a bicycle with him. He asked her to lend him £1. She replied she was unable to, but if he wished to go back to Oxford she would pay his fare. He accepted this suggestion, and left the bicycle in witness' charge. On April 4th she handed the bicycle to the police.- Prisoner pleaded guilty, and said he had been out out of work for three months, and had been driven to desperation owing to the want of food. He thought that during the time he had been imprisoned his wife and children had been put out into the street.- The Mayor said the prisoner would have to go to prison for one month. He was sorry to say there were other charges against him.
