CRAWLEY
Sudden Death.-An inquest was held on the 13th inst., before F. Westell, Esq., coroner, on the body of Charlotte, daughter of William Pratley, of Crawley, laborer, aged 3 years. The child had been robust and well up till the Friday preceding this inquiry, when her breath became very bad, but otherwise she was apparently as well as usual. About three o'clock n the following Sunday she was taken much worse, and the father went to Dr. Batt's surgery, where he was supplied with some medicine, and directions to apply a mustard poultice on the child's chest. The mother gave the child the medicine and applied the poultice, but neither gave relief, as the child grew gradually worse, and died about twelve o'clock the same night. Mr. Rawle, of Witney, surgeon, gave it as his opinion that death was caused by congestion of the lungs, and a verdict to that effect was accordingly returned. |
