County Hall, Saturday.- Present: G.W. Child Esq., W.H. Ashhurst, Esq.
Theft from Littlemore Asylum.- James East, 11, Russel-street, Osney, labourer, and Jane Pratley, Fawler, single woman, were charged on remand with stealing two blankets, one linen sheet, and one white counterpane, from Little Asylum, on or about 26th July, the property of Heurtley Sankey.- Mr. Fletcher defended the prisoners.- Joseph John Andrews, house steward at the Asylum, said that both the prisoners were formerly attendants at the Asylum. The female prisoner left on the 29th April last, and the male prisoner on the 31st March. He had examined a sheet, two blankets, and a counterpane, and two patchwork quilts, produced. With the exception of the patchwork quilts, he recognised these as similar to those used in the Asylum. He could swear to the sheet, as it had the Asylum stamp on it. He had missed a counterpane from the female side, and that corresponded with the one produced. None of the attendants had permission to take away goods on any pretence.- Cross-examined by Mr. Fletcher: Most of the Asylum goods were stamped, but not all.- Edwin Lawrence, pawnbroker, 29, Weston-terrace, North Paddington, London, produced a sheet, two patchwork quilts, two blankets, and a counterpane, which were offered in pawn by the female prisoner some time last month. Observing the marks on them, he questioned her as to where she got them from, and she replied they were her own property. He asked how it was there were the stamps of the Asylum on some of the goods, and she said "She had been an attendant at the Asylum, and had marked her goods with the stamp. He enquired how that could be, and she made no definite answer. He then told her he should detain the goods and make further enquiries. She gave as her address Jane East, 2, Hampden street, Harrow-road. Witness communicated with the police.- Cross-examined: The landlady of that house came with the woman.- The male prisoner was discharged, and the female prisoner pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with by the Bench. She was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. |
