MINSTER LOVELL.
At the Chipping Norton County Court on Saturday, the following cases were decided:-
Groves v. Godfrey - Claim by Mr. Alfred Groves, builder, Milton-under-Wychwood, for £9, one year's rent of land, against Ralph Godfrey, labourer, Worsham, near Witney. Mr. Toy represented plaintiff - Mr. George Groves, son of plaintiff, stated that his father owned some land at Worsham. He let part of that land, as agent for his father, to Godfrey in 1893, at £9 per year. Defendant had paid £9 on account, which was half of the rent due up to 1895. Defendant had the agreement and the land was let in his father's name. - His Honour amended the claim to "use and occupation" of land.- Godfrey said he owed nothing to Mr. Alfred Groves, and had no agreement. Mr George Groves had told him and others that as he could do nothing with the land, they might do as they liked with it, and when they had got it dug and planted, he charged them rent. They paid part the first year because they knew no better. He earned 12s. a week, and had seven children.- Judgment for claim, with costs, at 10s. per month.
Groves v. Pratley.- This was a similar case to the above, being an identical claim by A. Groves against G. Pratley, farmer, Minster Lovell, for another portion of the same land. - Judgment for claim at 10s. a month. |
