BURFORD.
BAMPTON WEST PETTY SESSIONS - Saturday.
Before the Rev. D.W. Goddard (Chairman), the Right Honourable Lord de Mauley, and W.H. Fox, Esq.
Mark Search, of Burford, and Jesse Pratley, of Fulbrook, hawkers, were summoned by Inspector Morgan for allowing horses to stray on the highway, at Fulbrook on the 23rd of April.- Edward Borton said: I am police constable at Burford. On Sunday, the 23rd of April, I was on duty in the Stow-road, and saw two horses on the road, and stood and watched them some twenty minutes. A man called Charles Pratley came. He was about a hundred yards away from the horses, but a little higher up. I saw two more horses; Mark Search was minding them; and stood about ten chains off.- Jonathan Banbury said: I am District Surveyor at Burford. I sent a copy off the notice produced to both of the defendants about a fortnight ago, and they have been issued throughout the district, cautioning people about depasturing cattle on the side of the highways.- The defendants were fined 2s. and costs, 10s., each of which amounts were paid. |

BAMPTON WEST PETTY SESSIONS.
Saturday, April 21st., 1883.
Before: The Rev. Ward Goddard (Chairman) and A.R. Heath, Esq.
Thomas Orchard, of Fulbrrok, was summoned by Charles Pratley, of the same place, for an assault at Fulbrook, on the 12th of April.- The said: I am a labourer and live at Fulbrook. On the 12th of April I went to Orchard's house and asked him to pay me 3s. 6d. for some digging I had done for him. He jumped up and struck me on the head with his hand. I did not use bad language, and knocked gently at the door. After considering the evidence of both parties, the Bench did not think the evidence sufficient to substantiate the alleged assault, and dismissed the case. |

WITNEY.
COUNTY COURT.
Before Fitzroy Cowper, Esq., Deputy Judge.
A Question of Fair Pay.
Painter v. Harper, - A claim of £1 10s. for work and labour done. Both parties live at Burford. The defendant had paid £1 4s. 3d. into Court.
Plaintiff said the defendant engaged him to lop some willow trees at Burford; they had no agreement. He and his son commenced the work on a Saturday, and finished it on the next Saturday, and he charged defendant £1 10s., which was at the rate of 2s. 6d. per day each.
Cross-examined by the defendant: He admitted they were hindered by the wet weather; the work done was worth the amount charged.
Plaintiff's son said he cut the poles, they nearly all hung over the river, and they had some difficulty in getting them out; his father got them out and tied them.
Charles Pratley said he had been asked by Painter to look at the work, and he considered the price charged was fair and reasonable; he would not do it for less.
His Honor said he considered the amount paid into Court a fair price for the work, and gave a verdict for the defendant with costs. |
