BAMPTON WEST PETTY SESSIONS - Saturday.

Before the Rev. D.W. Goddard (Chairman), the Right Honourable Lord de Mauley, and W.H. Fox, Esq.

Mark Search, of Burford, and Jesse Pratley, of Fulbrook, hawkers, were summoned by Inspector Morgan for allowing horses to stray on the highway, at Fulbrook on the 23rd of April.- Edward Borton said: I am police constable at Burford. On Sunday, the 23rd of April, I was on duty in the Stow-road, and saw two horses on the road, and stood and watched them some twenty minutes. A man called Charles Pratley came. He was about a hundred yards away from the horses, but a little higher up. I saw two more horses; Mark Search was minding them; and stood about ten chains off.- Jonathan Banbury said: I am District Surveyor at Burford. I sent a copy off the notice produced to both of the defendants about a fortnight ago, and they have been issued throughout the district, cautioning people about depasturing cattle on the side of the highways.- The defendants were fined 2s. and costs, 10s., each of which amounts were paid.

Assault at Charlbury Club.

William Dolloway, proprietor of a merry-go-round was charged by Jesse Pratley, swing-boat proprietor, with assaulting him at Charlbury, on July 3rd. Mr. Berridge, solicitor, appeared for Dolloway.

Alice Dolloway, daughter of the defendant in the above case, also summoned Isabella Pratley, daughter of the above complainant, for assaulting her on the same day. It appeared that on the day in question the parties were at Charlbury Club, when a quarrel took place between Alice Dolloway and Isabella Pratley. After the girls had been quarrelling for some time, Mrs. Pratley appeared on the scene, and it was alleged struck Alice Dolloway. Jesse Pratley and his son were about interfering in the matter, when William Dolloway came up. Jesse Pratley alleged that he was struck by Dolloway and knocked down. A number of witnesses were called on either side, and after a patient hearing of the case, the Bench fined Dolloway 15s. or 14 days, and dismissed the case against Isabella Pratley.

Sheep attacked by a Dog.

Mr. Matthew Savidge, jun., of Shipton-under-Wychwood, farmer, sued Mr. Arthur Paintin, of Fulbrook, baker, to recover the sum of £2 10s. for loss sustained by the death of a ewe sheep, which it was alleged had been attacked by defendant's dog, on the 14th January.

Jesse Pratley, dealer in cocks, said that on the 14th, January he followed defendant's trolley, being only ten or fifteen yards behind all the way he was sure the dog did not leave defendant when passing plaintiff's field; had it done so he must have seen it. There was a strange dog with him, but he did not know to whom it belonged.

The Bench refused to consider their verdict, and on again taking their seats, the Chairman announced that the Magistrates were not satisfied as to the ownership of the dog, and non-suited plaintiff.

SESSIONS - May 9th.

Straying Horses.- Jessee Pratley, swing-boat proprietor, of Witney, was summoned for allowing a horse and three geldings to stray on the highway, in the parish of Ascott-under-Wychwood, on April 22nd.- Defendant pleaded not guilty.- P.C. Surman stated that on Sunday, April 22nd, he was on duty on the Shipton-road, when he saw four horses straying on the highway. He went down the Ascott-lane, and there saw two vans. He saw a woman and asked her if the horses belonged to her, and she replied that she had to sell her horses to buy her children food, for her husband was in prison, but the horses belonged to defendant. He afterwards saw defendant on Milton Common, when the horses were straying again, but he saw witness coming and caught the horses and put them in the vans and went away. Defendant said he was obliged to leave Chipping Norton at Twelve o'clock on the Saturday night, and could not find a place for his horse. He had only one horse, and had nothing whatever to do with the other three; they belonged to the woman. That made three times he had been summoned for those horses, but they were not his.- Defendant against whom there were several previous convictions, was fined 10s. inclusive.- Paid.
