BULLINGDON PETTY SESSIONS.
County Hall - Saturday.- Before the Chairman (C.E. Thornhill, Esq.), the Warden of Merton, and G.W. Child, Esq.
Assault.- William Pratley, labourer, Stanton St. John, was summoned for assaulting Nellie Beesley at that place on the 9th inst.- Defendant was represented by Mr. T.W. Mallam, and pleaded not guilty.- The complainant stated that she had a country? _____? neighbour respecting some children, when the defendant came up and knocked her down, and she was ______? Up senseless.- By Mr. Mallam: The assault took place about half-past seven in the evening. She would swear that defendant struck her a blow in the cheek, knocking her backwards. She did not fall down of her own accord.- Fanny Matthews, said she was present at the time of the assault. She distinctly saw the defendant deal Beesley a deliberate blow, knocking her down. Witness was frightened at defendant's conduct and ran indoors.- Mr. Mallam submitted that complainant was a person of questionable character, and said he should call evidence to show that no blow was ____?- Alice Smith domestic servant, was called for the defence, and said she was having words with the complainant when Pratley came up and stepped between them. Defendant did not strike Beesley, who fell down of her own accord.- Lilian Brown, said she was in company with the last witness at the time the alleged assault was committed. Pratley simply put his hand between the complainant and Smith to part them. He did not strike the complainant.- The complainant _____? That the last witness was not present at the time of the assault.- The magistrate dismissed the case. |
