CITY COURT - Friday.
Before the Mayor, Aldermen W. Thorp and Browing, and Mr. Justice Taylor.
John Martin and John Smith, two vagrants, were committed to the house of correction for one month each. They went into the shop of Mr. Pratley, in Holywell, and helped themselves to a loaf and some butter, which they began to eat before Mrs. Pratley got into the shop. They said they were very hungry, and she told them to go about their business, but they told her to send for a policeman, which she did. The bench summarily convicted them for begging, as by their own confessions they had asked relief at five shops and been refused before they took the bread and butter. |
